Dr. Achim Hurrelmann on the European Community Studies Association in Canada (ECSA-C)
Dr. Achim Hurrelmann is Associate Professor of Political Science and former Director of the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) at Carleton University. He holds the Jean Monnet Chair “Democracy in the European Union” and serves as Associate Director of the Centre for European Studies (CES), Carleton’s EU Centre of Excellence. He is an elected member of the management board of the European Community Association-Canada (ECSA-C). Dr. Hurrelmann's research focuses on the politics of the European Union, with a particular emphasis on questions of democracy and legitimacy in the EU, multilevel governance, and European integration theory. His work has appeared in journals such as Political Studies, European Political Science Review, European Journal of Political Research, West European Politics. Sara Norrevik on the European Community Studies Association in Canada (ECSA-C)
Sara Norrevik is a PhD Candidate and Fulbright Grantee in Political Science at the University at Buffalo. Her dissertation "Trade Policy Preferences and Comprehensive Trade Agreements" consists of three papers that consider trade policy preferences among legislators, the public and elites under comprehensive trade agreements. Sara Norreviks major fields of interest are International Political Economy, Comparative Politics and American Politics. In 2018, Sara Norrevik received the Best Paper Award, Junior Scholar, from the European Community Studies Association Canada (ECSA-C) at their Biennial Conference. Emerging Scholars: Johannes Müller Gómez
Johannes Müller Gómez is a doctoral researcher at the Université de Montréal. In his PhD project, he analyses the implementation of international agreements in multi-level systems. From 2014 to 2017, he was a research associate at the Jean Monnet chair and the Centre for Turkey and EU Studies. He was the programme director for political science and public administration at the Turkish-German University in Istanbul, manager of the Jean Monnet project SUMMIT and project officer for the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence HOMER. Furthermore, at CETEUS, he was commissioned for matters regarding France and Québec. In his research, he focusses on the functioning of multi-level systems, matters of democracy and legitimacy, the European Parliament and the EU's external action. Emerging Scholars: Dr. Pablo Ouziel
Pablo Ouziel holds currently Post-Doctoral Fellowships with the Centre for Global Studies, the Borders in Globalization Project (BIG) and the Political Science at the University of Victoria, working on a project titled “Towards democratic responses to the crisis of democracy in Spain: Forms of Participatory and Representative Civic Engagement”. Pablo’s research interests include public philosophy, collective presences, horizontality, nonviolence and civic democracy. Emerging Scholars: Ahmed Hamila
Ahmed Hamila is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Political Science, Université de Montréal. Currently he is also the FNRS-F.R.S. research fellow at the Institute of Sociology, Université Libre de Bruxelles and the President of the Young Researchers Network of the European Community Studies Association – Canada. Ahmed was awarded the Robert Bourassa Foundation Excellence Award for the most promising doctoral thesis project in European Studies. The title of his PHD is: European Asylum Policy Related to Sexual Orientation: A Common System, Several Implementation Models. Ahmed's research areas include asylum policies in the EU and the refugee crisis in Europe. Emerging Scholars: Anna Gora
Anna Gora, PhD candidate at Carleton University. Her dissertation examines the role of the media on the politicization of the European Union (EU) during the course of the financial crisis. She holds an MA in European, Russian and Eurasian Studies with a specialization in European Integration, and her MA thesis looked at the Europeanization of national Green parties in Poland and the Czech Republic. Her broader research interests include European democracy and legitimacy, models of direct and participatory democracy, and contention. Emerging Scholars: Thibault Biscahie
Thibault Biscahie is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Politics at York University (Toronto), where he specializes in political economy, international relations and comparative politics. He holds a Master’s degree from Sciences Po Lille and has also studied at the Université du Québec à Montréal and the Université de Provence. He is currently teaching international politics at York University as a Teaching Assistant. His doctoral research examines the election of Emmanuel Macron through a Gramscian lens and aims to understand the implications of Macron’s neoliberal policies and Caesarist governance for France. This research project also seeks to explore the recomposition of the European hegemonic order that Macron’s election could entail.
